Retail Item Categories

Modified on Tue, 19 Sep 2023 at 10:35 AM

Prior to the fitDEGREE September 2023 Tag Management update, the fitDEGREE Admin had "Tags" inside of Retail and Discounts. This language was updated to Categories to provide differentiation from Tags and clarity on their purpose within the Studio Admin.

Now that we have the history down, let's discuss what Categories are and then where they can be located within  the Admin in terms of Retail Items.

A Category in fitDEGREE is a grouping of items under one specific label. This Category can be used for sorting items in certain screens and reports as well as assigning taxes in the case of Retail Item Categories.

Retail Categories

Inside of your fitDEGREE Admin if you go to the Setup area you can locate Retail under Pricing Options. Within your retail section you have access to create Retail Items and in this creation process is one place where you can locate the impact of Categories.

Categories in Retail Item Creation

When creating a Retail Item you will provide all of the basic information to assist within your Cart, but then at the bottom you have the ability to Select a Category.

If you click on this option to Select a Category you will open a drop down menu with the ability to place your Retail Item into a Category or to create a new one. Below is a sample drop down from our demo fitSpot.

When you place a Retail Item into a Category you have the option for it to take on the Categories pre-set tax amount. In addition to Category attaching an assigned tax to an Item, this Category will also be able to be leveraged inside of your Revenue Report in order to break down your revenue by Category.

Category Management

Inside of the Retail section of your Setup area of your Admin you not only have the ability to work with Categories during Retail Item creation and maintenance. You can also work with Categories right from your Management section.

To get to the section to Manage Categories, you want to click on the gear icon next to the plus sign in the Retail section.

Once clicked, this will open a new tab called Retail Item Categories. This screen is where all forms of Category maintenance can take place. From here you can add new Categories, edit old Categories, or delete Categories that do not serve your business any longer.

Remember, Retail Item Categories are meant to serve the purpose of enhancing your Revenue Reports, but they also serve as a tool to provide a Default Tax that is assigned to them. If you would like a particular tax assigned to a set of items, a Category is a great tool to leverage to ensure this task is accomplished.
